The Junior League of CC (JLCC) is planning a large event in partnership with TAMUCC called the Wild for Wellness Fitness Fiesta to be held at the TAMU campus on Saturday, March 31, 2012.

I was wondering if the CC Cycling club would like a booth to showcase what you do, any upcoming events, and to possibly grow your membership. There is no cost to you… we just want to provide all avenues of a healthy active lifestyle to the public… who desperately needs it.

Our main attraction will be several performances by Jump with Jill, the Rock Star Nutritionist. We are also in the process of securing basketball, tennis, & dance clinics by Islander athletics, ROTC, Army Rockwall & Navy fly over, community gardening, HEB cooking demos, local fitness experts & gyms, demonstrations by high school drill & cheer teams as well as various forms of dance (ball room, ballet, hip hop, etc…), martial arts, surf camp, running/cycling/triathlon clubs, CC Hooks, CC IceRays, CCPD, CCFC, and a showcase of “Healthy Food Options” at local restaurants. We are also working towards getting Del Mar College dental, EMS, and vision/hearing students involved.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

Thanks for this information. I think it is quite evident that it's not really the type of dog causing a problem, but the owners who are irresponsible with their pets. Although Larry Blas did mention 'pit bull' specifically, and I agree, we may be associating pit bulls with irresponsible owners. With that said, I've read quite a number of responses at the Caller times and there seems to be a rift between some 'pit bull' owners and the rest of the dog community. Luckily, in this case, a cyclist did not get seriously injured, but the community should be made more aware of the importance to keep your pet on a leash and secured. With the recent proposed 'microchip' campaign that is before the city council, I'm hoping that the problem of loose and unsecured, stray dogs will improve. On almost every ride and almost on a daily basis, our cycling community will see loose and stray dogs roaming the streets. It's a serious problem in Corpus Christi.

I appreciate you contacting me for information. The information I gave was found through a simple Google search, and solely relates to leash laws in Corpus Christi and Texas. That being said, our group has 1,200 Facebook members. That means that a slight 0.25% of the city's population even knows we exist. Our group is dedicated to safe and responsible off leash play for our dogs. We advocate responsible dog ownership, and are partnering with the city to build an official dog park so we have our own place to play without the dangers of traffic or loose fencing. It is highly unlikely that any member of our group would let their dog wander off leash and into the path of cyclists. Also, though Animal Control's records show bites occurring from "pit bull type" dogs, I wouldn't be so rash to lump the entire breed into a vicious category. We have plenty of pitties and pit mixes that come to group and play nicely with other dogs and people. In the two years I've coordinated our group, the only dog bite injury I've received was from a Chihuahua. I'm more apt to show distaste for poor owners than the breed they have raised improperly. I believe that our citizens need education about animal care, and we are hoping to do that through our dog park and media awareness. Again, I am sorry that a cyclist was injured by a dog but cannot emphasize enough that our group members would be much more sensible about the dangers of letting a dog roam off leash.

In the old days , riders used newspapers inside their jersey to protect their chest from the cold wind early in the morning. The paper could then be discarded when the temperature warmed up. I have used an HEB plastic bag
over my chest as a chest warmer very effectively. It can also just be moved aside as the temperature warms up.

If the temperature is below 50 degrees, one layer of protective clothing on all bare skin makes it much more comfortable to ride.

Also small plastic baggies over the toes and socks keep the toes warm. They can also be removed if the weather
gets too warm but that is seldom necessary.
